My second week here I was actually very sick and didn't do much but homework and lay around. SO I will post up my journal from my third week here....

Journal Week Three By: Britany Ruby

When I first walked into the office of Restore clothing office my first thought was this was where did the name come from? All I saw was moose heads and athletic wear, and I had no idea what was being restored. Once I met the owner Anthony it didn’t take me long to figure it out; RESTORE stands for Responsible, Earth Friendly, Sustainable, Technological, Organic, Recycled, and Ergonomic. This company is a strong representation of what being green is really like from the clothing to the way the office works. I thought it was very interesting to see that the owner cares about his environment in has daily life; he eats organic, reuses plastic cups, and uses all organic and recycled fabric in his clothes. Anthony showed us a $50 t-shirt that truly felt like the best shirt you’ll ever wear showed me what true organic cotton feels like. Yes, it was just a plain white shirt but it was made well from high quality fabrics, and from high quality organic fibers. Once I realized that this shirt was better than any other white t-shirt I’d ever own and would probably last much longer, I knew that I would have to make this my first investment purchase. For $50-$60 I can just buy one white t-shirt instead of the 5 or 6 I run through a year and that is definitely worth it.

After we left the Restore Clothing office where all the ideas are made, we went to see how the rest of the process is done. We went to a building down the street where the patterns are cut, we got to walk around the offices and see the patternmakers at work. Then we got to walk back down the street to another building where the garments are actually sewn together, it was really cool to see all of these women working on different parts of the garment like an assembly line. I also loved that all of the different buildings were on the same street about a five minute walk from each other. I appreciate that Restore is keeping business in New York and helping to build the economy. After my walk around the garment making process, I truly appreciated all the work that designers go through to manufacture clothing. I also can’t wait to buy my first item by Restore clothing.

...I also did some exploring outside of class....found a few restaurants I like, and of course great shopping!

Week One-First week in the city

After moving in and trying to learn my way around the city, I started my week off with a short internship at the Texworld trade show. While it was interesting to see all the beautiful pieces of fabric the trade show had to offer, I actually found the entire experience pretty boring. I spent both days of my internship, standing around guarding a trend display, which is as easy as it sounds. The rest of the week I was looking for a challenge.

In my first day of the study tour class, we got a chance to see real high class shopping first hand by going to Madison Avenue, we started in Barney’s and went to all nine floors. I was really amazed by the variety of clothing Barney’s had, every time you stepped onto a new floor, it was like walking into a different store or showroom. I plan on going back to Barney’s to buy me at least one investment piece before I leave. After Barney’s went window shopping for accessories’; we stopped in Ivanna Trump’s jewelry store and tried on some beautiful diamond rings, while also doing a little networking with the sales associates. Then we went to Chanel, which was a learning experience in itself. We learned that only the Chanel costume jewelry has the double C’s on it, we also learned that Chanel has symbolic pieces like her Camelia flower. We also went to Donna Karen and Giuseppi Zanotti shoes, this day of shopping made me fall in love with fashion all over again!

To end my week, I started my internship at SELF magazine, found a really cool and pocket friendly diner in the NYU area, got lost on the subway, and had a beautiful dinner with my friends at the VIEW restaurant. I can’t wait for my adventures this week.

New York Updates

I don't know why, but this winter break has gone extremely fast! Like seriously, I will be hitting the road for the big apple next Thursday. And it didn't dawn on me, until my mom made hotel reservations for the weekend. Then it hit me, I still have so much to do!! I just washed clothes, but I'm sure I'll have to wash again and pack! And finish this article, that's due before I go to New York. Did I mention packing? Lol, am I the only one who can never repack all the clothes in the same suitcase, that I had brought them home in? Well today, I wanted to feel like I was actually preparing to leave, so I had fun with mapquest:

NERVOUS!!!!

Hello Blog Fans,

If you haven't checked the timer lately let me clue you in. I AM 19 DAYS AWAY FROM MOVING INTO MY MANHATTAN APARTMENT! And I can honestly say I am sooo very nervous, and not just because of the scary people that come along with the big city. But, because of the living arrangements, I have just found out that me and my roommate will be cramped up into a little bitty, 1 bedroom studio apartment(check out the picture above), and this would be ok, if we weren't both trying to invite a butt load of people up to visit. But somehow I'm sure we will work things out, maybe I won't actually bring my whole wardrobe with me. IDK?

But there's good news!! I have finished a lot of things on my To Do List, check it out:

1. Finish fall semester's finals with good grades-check

2. Meet with advisor to confirm classes for the spring and summer semester-check

3. Move out of my current apartment-check

4. Sell books back...collect donations...hustle up some funds lol-still in progress

5. Find a internship for this semester-check

6. Get hair cut and dyed again!-dyed, still in progress

7. Find bank and doctor's that I can use in the city.-check

8 Handle biz before I leave....doctor's, shopping, get directions...etc-still in progress

9. Move In and try to find my way around or at least which subway I need to get on.

10. O, I am taking classes lol, so buy books and school supplies and all that jazz lol.

And I have some other stuff to add to the list above as well, but I won't bore you with that.

The Countdown to NYC!!!

If you would so kindly check the timer to the right you will notice that I only have 30more days until I move into my New York City apartment....YES! It took me a while to feel excitement, because things kept getting in my way...but now I'm letting all the worries go. I've gotten accepted to the program, I payed my tuition and for a safe apartment to live in, I may scrounge on living expenses; but who cares I won't be in Ohio anymore!!!

Now all I have to do is my make and complete a To-Do List...here goes:

1. Finish fall semester's finals with good grades

2. Meet with advisor to confirm classes for the spring and summer semesters

3. Move out of my current apartment

4. Sell books back...collect donations...hustle up some funds lol

5. Find a internship for this semester

6. Get hair cut and dyed again!

7. Find bank and doctor's that I can use in the city.

8 Handle biz before I leave....doctor's, shopping, get directions...etc

9. Move In and try to find my way around or at least which subway I need to get on.

10. O, I am taking classes lol, so buy books and school supplies and all that jazz lol.

***My personal list is so much more detailed....but I just wanted to give you all a glimpse of what it's like to pack up your whole life basically and move into a itty bitty studio apartment that you have to share with someone else. I'm tired just thinking about it and I still haven't figured out what I'm not taking with me...IDK! But, I promise to keeo you posted***

O, good old New York. Home of Lady Liberty and the fashion capital of the world. I want you so bad I can taste you, and I am in so much anticipation of our spring tryst together I can hardly focus on finals......but life keeps getting in the way of our love.

-Yes, I wrote a love poem to New York. Why? Because, it seems to me that fate may not want me to make it there this January. First I and my academic record had to go under review(my advisor told me not to worry about this.) But after that minor hold up, now I've just found out my finances are lacking. I have realized that when I get to New York City, I will be beyond broke. Which is where you loyal readers come in, I am passing the collection plate to you guys. I have posted a donation button above this post, please donate any amount you can afford. I will greatly appreciate, and the favor will be returned if need be.

The Great Internship Search...

In preparation for my journey to NYC I have been tirelessly applying for internships. I have even worked out a way to get credit for my internship(even though I am technically not suppose to take one for credit yet), just so I can get a internship at a magazine. However I have nothing to show for my hard work.

---Besides playing phone tag with Liz Claiborne, and 2 interviews with Rodale Inc.(a magazine publisher), nothing has happened. I feel like I am running out of internships to apply for-at least in the fashion magazine realm.

I am also interested in Fashion PR, should I apply for PR internships as well?

New York, New York!!!!

As I try to finish out this horrid semester in Kent, Ohio with good enough grades, I contemplate a new beginning. If you didn't know, I will be spending all next semester in New York City for school and hopefully an internship! And as I scheduled my classes, and completed my first internship interview...I realized NYC is right around the corner. Now I will admit, this will not be your normal study abroad trip, and for some people going to New York for a semester is no big deal. But for me, someone who grew up in an urban gutter of Ohio, it's huge!! People I grew up with dream of babies and taking on a management position...some maybe even doctor's and lawyers. But I have never heard anyone in my hometown say they wanted to move to New York and write for a fashion magazine(Or maybe they left already:)

----And in honor of my NYC days to come, I will be starting a countdown(an actual timer is posted on the side of this blog.) Along with that I will be posting as much info on preparing for the Big City and finding an internship as possible.
